Non Wovens is a class of textiles/sheet products, unique in industry, which is defined in the negative; that is, they are defined in what they are not. Nonwovens fabrics are different than the conventional textile fabrics and paper. Nonwovens are not based on yarns and (with frequent exceptions) do not contain yarns.
They are based on webs of individual fibres. Nonwovens are different than paper in that non wovens usually consist entirely or at least contain a sizeable proportion of long fibres and/or they are bonded intermittently along the length of the fibres. Although paper consists of fibre webs, the fibres are bonded to each other so completely that the entire sheet comprises one unit. In nonwovens we have webs of fibres where fibres are not as rigidly bonded and to a large degree act as individuals.
The sheet or web structure fibres bonded together by entangling filaments (and by perforating films) mechanically, thermally or chemically are known as nonÂwoven fibres. They are flat, porous sheets made directly from separate fibres or from molten plastic or plastic film.
Due to their properties such as stretchability, flame resistance, washability, strength, absorbency, liquid repellence, resilience, softness, cushioning, filtering, bacterial barrier and sterility the non-woven are widely used in several industries. Non-woven textiles are produced with high-speed and low-cost processes as compared to woven and knitting technology.
The non wovens can be classified based on their production, type of raw materials, end use of materials and property wise.
